Among all the works produced by the great scholars of Islam, few have achieved the universal recognition of Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyyah — The Forty Hadith of Imam al-Nawawi. Though it contains only forty-two hadiths, it is considered a comprehensive summary of the entire religion.

Who Was Imam al-Nawawi?

Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi was born in 1233 CE in the Syrian village of Nawa, from which he takes his name. He studied under the greatest scholars of his era in Damascus and became one of the foremost authorities on hadith, fiqh, and Islamic jurisprudence.

Despite his immense scholarship, he was known for his extreme asceticism. He reportedly owned only two garments and spent his nights in worship and study. He died at the relatively young age of 44, yet left behind a legacy that continues to teach Muslims fourteen centuries later.

The Forty Hadith — A Complete Curriculum

What makes this collection remarkable is the selection criteria. Imam al-Nawawi chose hadith that are comprehensive — that is, they each contain a fundamental principle of Islam. Scholars have said that if a person truly understood and acted upon just these forty-two hadith, they would have mastered the essentials of the religion.

"Islam is built upon five pillars..." — This is the second hadith in the collection, summarizing the entire structure of Islamic practice in a few words.
